A Life For The Truth — Story of a Whistleblower
A Life For The Truth - 30×46” Oil on canvas
The Backstory
This painting depicts a real event. A young Chinese Armed Police officer was once assigned to a secret security detail. His task was not to guard a high-ranking official or a wealthy tycoon, but to ensure that a forced organ harvesting surgery proceeded without interruption.
The "donor" on the table was neither brain-dead nor a condemned criminal. She was a kind, innocent young teacher. The CCP had abducted and tortured her, trying to break her spirit and force her to renounce her faith. When they realized that only death could stop her convictions, they decided to extract one last bit of profit from her existence: her organs. To ensure the "absolute freshness" of the harvest, the procedure was performed while she was fully conscious, without a drop of anesthesia.
The young man, who had naively believed he was serving his country and his people, stood by as the scalpel sliced through the woman’s chest. He watched as blood gushed out. He saw doctors—men whose calling was to heal—reach into the open cavity of a living, innocent human being and pull out a still-beating heart.
The blade fell; the vessels were severed.
Then came a horrific convulsion—a scream of such agonizing, soul-tearing pain that it defies imagination.
At that moment, the room was indistinguishable from hell.
The woman died. And so as something inside the young man. As a police officer, he stood paralyzed, watching the very person he was sworn to protect being brutally slaughtered. He was powerless to stop it; worse, he was forced by the regime to act as the watchdog for this murder. Those widely opened painful eyes, the shredded scream, the fountain of blood—the sheer horror of the scene threatened to shatter his soul. He wanted to howl in pain; he wanted to turn his weapon on everyone in that room. But he held his hand. He could not face the consequences.
Remorse.
He was haunted by his impotence to save her, and by the thought of the countless others enduring dehumanizing torture or death for their beliefs. For a long time, this was his waking nightmare. But the nightmare did not last forever. When he could no longer bear another second of the guilt, he chose to expose the truth to the overseas human rights organization and shortly after, vanished from the face of the earth.
In the end, the young man finally woke from his nightmare. He bought the redemption of his soul with his life. In his recording, he left these words: “If I’m dead, you can write an article about what I have done. I am not trying to make a name for myself; I want more people like me to speak out, to have the courage to tell the truth.”
And this is the reason I picked up my brush.

The Design
Depicting such an intense scene was a challenge. Since it is impossible to fully replicate the horror the police officer saw with his own eyes, I decided to focus the image on his face. I hope the audience to see his painful expression and wonder about the cause of his suffering—to lead them to seek the truth and hear him "personally" answer. Therefore, the young officer stands alone in the frame, positioned before the heavy doors of the operating room. The small observation window—the only portal into the nightmare within—is obscured by his head. When you attempt to peer inside, you find only his eyes meeting yours. The bloody secrets are locked away behind him, but the truth will leak out, tracing the path of his tears.
At the officer's feet lies a dropped cloth bag, with a yellow banner peeking out. This hints at the identity of the victim: a Falun Gong practitioner. The banner is printed with the Chinese characters “真 善 忍”, which mean "Truthfulness, Compassion, and Forbearance." —the very principles she died to uphold, and also the spirit that the CCP cannot coexist with and wishes to erase from the earth. Because of the folds in the fabric, only the character “真”is fully visible. This character stands for the "Truth" that these two pure souls—the steadfast practitioner and the whistleblower—gave their lives to protect. It also means "Truthfulness," the radiant light of humanity they embodied that pierces through the surrounding shroud of darkness. And that is how I got the inspiration of naming this painting A Life For The Truth.
Reflection From The Artist
The first time I heard this officer’s testimony was in the documentary State Organs, which exposes the CCP’s forced organ harvesting against prisoners of conscience. I felt a profound need to archive this story through my art—to ensure the world recognizes this ongoing atrocity, and to pay tribute to the man’s righteous act of defiance. At the time, I was unaware of his fate. I held onto a fragile hope that he might be living a quiet, free life somewhere beyond China’s borders. I used to imagine him one day standing before this painting, seeing his own story reflected back at him. "How would he react?" I often wondered.
Then, the fact reached me: he never made it out. He had vanished into the silence of the state. At that moment, a mix of exhaustion and grief hit me. Another good soul extinguished for the crime of telling the truth. I found myself asking, When will this ever end?
Yet, even in this sorrow, I am not consumed by despair. I am reminded of the practitioner's final words: “You can kill me, but can you kill hundreds of millions of us?” Evil’s greatest fear is the light of exposure. It may silence a single voice, but it cannot silence the conscience of the world. I believe that there will be many more people in this world willing to step out for the truth. At least, I am. This story that they could no longer tell by themselves, I will keep telling it through this painting.
